If you meet the requirements, you can deregister through your registration office's portal yourself and only pay the official fee of 2,10 to 5,90 euro.
The check costs nothing and you reveal nothing during it.
What you need for that
ID card with eID
The online ID function has to be activated, and you need the matching PIN.
Card reader or NFC phone
A card reader on your computer, or a smartphone with NFC and the AusweisApp.
BundID account
Additionally required in some districts, sometimes even at a high trust level.
This is exactly where it fails in practice. Very few people have the online ID function activated, and even fewer know the PIN. That is why we exist. We tell you anyway, because it is true.
