Registration certificate part I (Zulassungsbescheinigung Teil I)
The paper document from your car (Fahrzeugschein). Take the vehicle identification number from field E and the security code under the green sticker on the back. The number on the sticker is not the code.
Both plates
Front and rear. Scratch the round registration seal free with a coin and a three-character code appears. Keep the plates.
A coin and your e-mail address
The coin for the seals, the address for your confirmation and the certificate. That is all.

A deregistered vehicle may not be driven or parked on public roads. To drive it again, register it first.
Insurance and tax stop by themselves
The registration office informs your insurer and the customs tax office. Vehicle tax paid ahead is refunded for the remaining days.
The plates stay with you
Keep them or dispose of them. Want the same number on your next car? Ask the office to reserve it; that is possible for up to twelve months.
Questions that come up
Where do I find the security codes?
Two are on the plates: under the round registration seal, front and rear. Scratch the seal free with a coin and a three-character code appears. The third is on the back of the registration certificate part I, under a green sticker; that one has seven characters. The green sticker is only the cover: peel it off or scratch it off, and the code is underneath. The number on the green sticker is not the code. The form explains for each code where to find it.
What if a seal is missing or a code is unreadable?
Then the online route is closed for this vehicle. Only a visit to the registration office helps in that case. You pay nothing here.
How long does it take?
Filling in the form takes about a minute. Most online deregistrations are processed the same working day; sometimes it takes until the next working day. The certificate reaches you the moment it is issued.
Can I correct a typing mistake?
Yes, as long as you have not ordered. The form checks the shape of the plate number and the length of each code while you type, so most slips are caught right away.
Can I deregister a vehicle that is not registered in my name?
Only the registered keeper, or someone acting on the keeper's behalf, may deregister a vehicle. The office matches the codes to the vehicle, not to a name.
I have sold or scrapped the car, or it has been stolen. Does this still work?
Sold: deregister before you hand over the plates, unless the buyer registers the car right away. Scrapped: deregister the same way; the recycling certificate is a separate matter for the office. Stolen: report it to the police first; without the plates the online route does not work.
What if the office rejects the application?
Then you get the full amount back, without discussion, together with the reason the office gives.
Can I do this myself?
Yes. With an activated online ID function and a card reader or an NFC phone you can deregister through i-Kfz and pay only the office fee. This service is for everyone who prefers not to.
What is stored?
Your plate number, the vehicle identification number, the codes (encrypted) and your e-mail address, only as long as the application needs them. No name, no bank details, no copy of your ID. If you came through a Google ad, its click identifier is stored in your browser and with your order (privacy policy, § 6). Payment runs through Apple Pay, Google Pay, your card provider or PayPal.
